Vivo. Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has been a sponsor of the IPL since 2018, but today the company has withdrawn from sponsoring the T20 tournament this year. According to reports, Vivo has not stopped its 5-year sponsorship program with the BCCI and will be sponsoring matches in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
The news comes amid growing anti-Chinese sentiment within India and growing backlash against Vivo being a sponsor of popular cricket matches. This year’s IPL is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates, with matches taking place in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
Vivo title sponsor of IPL 2020
According to a source close to the money control within the BCCI, the reason for Vivo’s exit may have something to do with the company that wants to pay the reduced amount for title sponsorship. Vivo Rs. 440 crore this year as part of the deal, but the company is expected to raise Rs. 130 crore citing poor sales in the country due to anti-Chinese sentiments.
The BCCI will float the tender for this year’s title sponsorship over the next three days and then decide on the sponsor for the tournament, the sources said.
Meanwhile, a member of the IPL governing body spoke to PTI, “I can say that all our supporters are with us. I hope you can read between the lines.”
IPL 2020 is scheduled to run for 53 days from September 19, with the final scheduled to take place on November 2020. Afternoon matches are ISD from 3:30 pm, and evening matches are ISD from 7:30 pm.
